Africa is more than just drumming

Africa & Festivals

“Africa is the home of limitless potential. Feel free to dream and, together, we will make it happen." (Irvin Khoza 2010).

In a world that gravitates every day to violence, hatred, and racism, festivals remains one of the most important channel where people of different status, race, color come together to celebrate humanity and other aspects of life. Festivals are therefore considered as portholes into a society's culture, thereby offering fascinating glimpses into ancient traditions, believes, rituals and customs. Be they religious, cultural, musical or something else, travelers know that festivals are a great opportunities to absorb and experience other culture.

Nowadays a festival is an event, which is usually organized by a local community, an organization, or private individuals which usually centers on celebrating some aspects of that community that are unique to sanity and meaningful national development. It has proved itself a satisfying mode of promoting international friendship and understanding for example, Africans believe very strongly in the moderating and salvaging qualities of culture in easing world tensions. It is therefore for this reason that culture to the Africans represent a treasure that must be preserved and pass unto future generation. During festivals the spirit of one African family is evident, irrespective of their origin, ethnic and traditions.

Africa is famous as the continent of festivals as colorful and vibrant festivals ranging from musical, religious, harvest and culture are celebrated all over the continent from north, south, west and east. International visitors from all over the world travel to Africa to celebrate the indigenous African musical and dance expressions which have been maintained by oral tradition and stylistically distinct from that of the western world. “While dance styles may vary from country to country, nevertheless they are peculiar features within all the ethnic of the continent, examples are the slanted torso, hips rotation, clapping, stamping, tapping upward, forward, backward and circular moments with sharp turns and acrobatics leaps as well as multi-metric enactments movements in which different parts of the body are made to respond to different musical instruments” (Paul Carter 2002)

In Germany as well as other parts of the world, the African culture is the only valuable asset that is still admired, envied and respected. “The western appreciation of traditional jazz music gives white people a certain feel for African cultural sensitivity, poetry and drive. Music is one of the fruitful meetings grounds for black and white people and gives clues as to how common desires and feelings could, in better eras to come, be developed, co-ordinate and enjoyed.”(Geert Hofstede 2000).

A survey conducted by the GFK shows that, amongst the Germans who travel to Africa for vacation, 26% travel for the purpose of discovering the African culture.

Although Germany is not a melting pot society, where people have developed strategies for interacting with strangers” (Richard D. Lewis 2005), nevertheless the African culture still earns much respect within the Germans society. Germans are still fascinated by the charms and myth of Africa’s culture and people as well as the rest of the world.  As a general rule there is plentiful coexistence between Africans and Germans, but little togetherness. Of course, everything is not black and white; nuances prevail, nevertheless nobody denies that the integration of immigrants remains an unresolved political and social task in Germany.

All over Africa, Germany's strong interest is visible and strongly felt, the German culture is strongly represented; the Goethe Institutes promote Germany values and culture. Likewise nowadays, in Germany, a modern society of liberal thinkers is making progress by reviving its socio-cultural policy which is gearing towards promoting the African culture in Germany.

The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line—the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men. It was a phase of this problem that caused the Civil War (Dubois).
